Dom. Fair play to your grandad. He was in the same situation as mine. But mine was ramc and not an officer. He had to interview the inmates as he spoke a few languages. Terrible stories.

my grandfather was one of the first officers in to bergen belsen
he was a very tough man, and like many of that generation saw things we hopefully will never have to
but he had nightmares about that place for years

People who argue that the holocaust didn't happen are not worth debating with, What they are saying is they hate Jews for whatever their reasons, and research anything that will reinforce their world view.

I watched it last night on 4OD. I've been to Auschwitz and would suggest that it forms a school trip for all students of 13+. It's harrowing beyond belief but a phenomenal museum.
To those on here, who for reasons only they will ever understand, doubt or even argue that this happened I've one thing to say to you.

What the Nazis did in those camps is something that is difficult to comprehend..the pure evil of it.
Watching those piles of pathetic bodies being thrown in a pit is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. And will ever see. Seen it before of course, but one of those you can never get your but around, all that hatred towards other human beings is staggering, but its shows chillingly what human beings are capable of doing to one another.

The survivors are amazing people. One cannot imagine the horror they saw with their eyes and the memories they carry in their heads.
I have met a couple through my work and they have a inner strength that its so powerful.

I think not knowing jewish ancestry is quite common, lots of name changing and hiding the fact. Certainly its only fairly recently ive known about mine. Also I think in the case of reform and liberal Judaism its accepted down the paternal line as well as the maternal.
Anyway today has had a profound affect on me and I intend to explore my jewish side further.
